Single pointed Yogic Concentrative Meditation

Yogic Meditation — Dhyana (ध्यान) in Sanskrit,
Meditation is the seventh limb of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Here we are going to focus on Single pointed Concentration. Sit in your yogic meditative posture and look at the tip of your nose. Just like passing the sunlight through one lens passes one beam.

As you keep practicing it every day for 3 to 5 mins, you will start noticing your mind is learning to concentrate; by controlling the two optic nerves, you now begin to achieve control of the arc of reaction, and so to the power of the will.

Concentrative Meditation helps our mind to learn to ignore the hurdles while meditating. Any internal or external distractions are no longer in control once you master the art of Meditation. Scattered thoughts have no power. Concentrative Meditation provides laser sharpness to your mind.

What is concentrative mediation?

मथाणबभतध्यानाद ्वा ॥ ३९॥
yathabhimatadhyanad VA

Meditation on anything that appeals to one is good. This does not mean any wicked subject, but anything good that you like, any place that you like best, any scenery that you like best, any idea that you want best, anything that will concentrate the mind.

Let your mind think of an image or an object, and hold that image at the Third eye chakra (Agya Chakra) or Heart Chakra (Anahata chakra). If the mind succeeds in receiving the sensations only through the chosen part of your body, that is deep concentration, also called Dharana. When the mind succeeds in keeping itself in that state for a longer time, you achieve concentrative Meditation, also known as Ekagrata Dhyana. There are many different forms and types of Meditation you can practice. Concentration Meditation is the essence of all knowledge; through this knowledge, we reach our true nature.

Types of Concentrative Meditation

Meditate on breath: inhalation and exhalation focus on it. Our first connection to the world is our breath.

Meditate on sound: (Transcendental Meditation) Mantra, word, song, music, anything you prefer. If you are using a mantra, don’t chant the mantra out loud. You slowly recall the sound mentally, focusing only on each word and sound.

Meditate on the form: You are not gazing at the form. Visualize the form at your Agya chakra and hold it.

Meditate on formless: Here, you expand your consciousness. This is the hardest one of the four — thoughtless mediation.

How to practice concentrative Meditation?

Sit in your yogic meditative posture
Surrender all body movements
Restrict your focus on the object
Hold extraordinary mindfulness

Practicing Meditation regularly can train your mind to control negative emotions or your stream of consciousness (5 Vrittis).

Master the Yogic Meditative Posture

Sit cross-legged
This helps your descending energy or Apana vayu flow seamlessly.

Straight back
If leaned forward, depressing thoughts will occur. If tilted back, you may experience restless thoughts. If you are leaning on the right-side idle thoughts will rise. If you are tilting on the left side, sexual thoughts will arise.

Shoulders even
The body should look like a shape of a triangle.

Hands resting on your lap L shape is nature posture for our hands. Hands need to be together to keep the body’s energy circulating.

Neck with a gentle hook, chin slightly tucked in.

Eyes closed
The stillness of the eyeballs comes with great concentration or still gaze.

Lip slightly parted with a soft smile but gently touching. This is important; it helps to calm your mind.

Teeth are gently joined, and the tongue should touch the pallet’s tip.
